The Tannery Arts Center Celebrates the Season with the Winter Art Market
byBree KarpavageonDecember 4, 2024

We see it everywhere during the holiday season – shop local, shop small, support local artists. This invitation to the community to invest in our local economy during the busiest shopping month of the year is a critical reminder that small businesses depend on our support now and year-round. I recently saw a local business post on Instagram about the importance of shopping locally. It said, “Whenever you shop small, a small business gets its wings.” …100%

Join in the festivities on Saturday, December 14 from 10am-5pm as the Arts Council Santa Cruz County presents the Winter Art Market at the Tannery Arts Center. In its 12th year, this community-led event brings together studio and resident artists in collaboration, creating a unique event filled with beautiful handmade gifts for the holidays, carolers singing about the campus, engaging family crafts, art demos, and food & beverage all packaged in a festive holiday atmosphere.

“Every year this diverse community comes together to create the Winter Art Market, an annual celebration of the season, artistry, and community.”

Bree Karpavage

Featuring dozens of open artist studios, unique pop-up shops from Tannery loft artists and guest artists, and a kid’s makers zone, the Winter Art Market brings the community together to celebrate the holidays through creativity. You’ll find special holiday exhibits and sales throughout the studios displaying a range of artwork: ceramics, glass, jewelry, prints and cards, ornaments, clothing, henna, and so much more.

One of the most popular holiday exhibits on campus is the “Small Works” gift show at Radius Gallery. Over 20 local artists are represented in the show through December 22 showing affordable art that makes the perfect gifts. Radius is located in the South Studios, Building 1050, Studio 127.

While visiting the South Studios, check out Suzy Rad’s animal portraits in Studio 123, Ceramics Studios 122 and 120, Gallery 125 representing seven unique artists, and Katie Scott Photography and Linda Lord Watercolors in Studio 128. Glass artist Chris Mosely will be bringing back his interactive sculpture building exhibit in Studio 124, where the community is invited to pick up the torch and contribute to the design.

The Courtyard in the center of campus is home to ten artist studios and the Community Tree. SALT the Store in Studio 115 is owned and curated by Tannery resident and artist Sarah Borgeson who creates a colorful wonderland of giftable items with her collection of artwork, jewelry, vintage goods, and plants. Here, you’ll also find River Art Studio artist Linda Cover offering a festive, family-friendly ornament-making craft, a photo booth presented by Cosmo Chic, and guest artists at Sacred Mud Henna & Tattoo. In Cafe 112, Areperia 831 will be popping up for the day serving delicious arepas and other Venezuelan fare. This cozy community space offers a place to enjoy a bite and a cup of coffee.

Down the covered hallway from the Courtyard, you’ll find resident Tannery kids selling their crafts on your way to the North Studios in Building 1060. The Printmakers at the Tannery, a collective of 28 artists in studio 107, will be hosting live demonstrations of several printmaking techniques, including screen printing, gelli plate, monotype & intaligio. They have a beautiful variety of prints and cards for sale and goods from guest artists Spontaneous Confections (French pastries and desserts), Ginger Mosley (handmade wreaths), and Michele Beard (handmade purses.)

The North Studios are also home to Apricity Gallery, Studio 105 artists Amanda Hess (Ev&No Jewelry) & Jenee Gill (collage) with guest artist Cristina McCutcheon (Localife Flowers), Pianist Robert Jackson, and Everyone’s Music School will celebrate the season with a performance from their in-house all women’s choir.
