Interim Finance Director

The Job: Arts Council Santa Cruz County is seeking an experienced Interim Finance Director to oversee and manage its financial operations during an 8-10 week period starting mid-July. The Interim Finance Director will be responsible for a range of financial tasks including grant financial reporting, year-end close activities, interfacing with audit and finance committees, and supervision of bookkeeper. This position requires the ability to learn quickly, strong attention to detail, advanced knowledge of nonprofit financials, and the ability to work independently.
Schedule: Flexible, 10-15 hours per week during regular business hours
Rate of Pay: Temporary contract position, $110 to $160 per hour, depending on experience
Location: Hybrid remote/in-person. In-person work at our Santa Cruz office on the Tannery Arts
Center campus

Responsibilities:

Provide support for grant applications and reporting

Shepherd final stages of previous year audit

Supervise bookkeeper

Cut checks weekly during planned bookkeeper vacation

Process budget forecast updates as required

Address incidental requests from staff

Conduct year-end closing activities as time allows:
Complete bank reconciliations

Reconcile final quarterly income against donor database
-
Audit income and expenses
-
Accrue year-end PTO and payroll
Reconcile and update liability accounts (Expensify)
Reconcile and update deferred revenue
Update the net asset schedule
Audit contracts to ensure backup documentation for revenue
Oversee collation of board minutes, bank statements, committee and board rosters
Audit grantmaking
Audit pre-paid expenses
Update benefits schedule
Prepare and distribute year-end fiscal sponsee reports
Reconcile in-kind donations
Review all non-recurring journal entries with Executive Director
Review year-end AR/AP balances, ensuring alignment with contracts and payments to date
Prepare shared cost journal entries for Q4 and update off-book schedule
Update depreciation schedule
Reconcile IRS Form 941 to payroll system
Update year-end Arts Education contract schedule and reconcile with relevant stakeholders.
Prepare the Statement of Functional Expenses
Review and follow up on uncleared checks
Analyze financials for any errors, working collaboratively with staff to rectify discrepancies.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Extensive experience in finance or accounting roles with a focus on nonprofit organizations
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial reporting, compliance, and grant management
- Proficiency in Quickbooks, preferably Quickbooks Online
- Experience with Bill.com, Expensify, and Asana a plus
