Bio

Claudia Stevens is a practicing artist. She illustrates for Sunset Magazine, Bantam Books, Harcourt and Brace, Rodale Press and other publishers. Claudia is the full-time art teacher for the Popper-Keizer Advanced Elementary School and has taught SPECTRA residencies and workshops since 1991. She has also been an Artist in Residence throughout the Monterey Bay area. Her work with children includes mixed media, drawing, painting and clay sculpture. Credential: Masters Degree. Additional Languages: Spanish

Classes

Mixed Media: Drawing and Painting

Using color pencil, charcoal, watercolor, pastels and inks, and printmaking, the students focus on representational drawing and painting as well as imagination. Projects are multi-cultural and include the study of old masters (Renaissance period), self-portrait, animals (using real-life specimens), landscape, perspective, figure studies, curriculum based projects and more. Claudia uses a sequential step-by-step approach with the goal of creating confidence and a strong foundation for the continuing exploration of expression through drawing and painting. Mathematics can be integrated into all workshops.

Grade level: K-6

Clay Sculpture

Working with clay, students learn the basics of hand building: slab, pinch, coil and sculpture. Utilizing surface texture and color, students learn sound construction methods necessary for kiln firing. Projects include, mask making, bas relief, ocarina whistles, pinch pots, tea pots, animals, and more.The major goal of this workshop is creating confidence and a strong foundation for the continuing exploration of expression using drawing, painting and clay sculpture.

Mixed Media: Drawing, Painting & Clay Sculpture

This workshop is a blend of drawing, painting and clay sculpture. Combining both of the above class descriptions, this workshop offers a wide range of mixed media. This program meets the California Visual Arts Standards.
